The meaning of the name, which comes from Greek, is unknown. The Peridot is also called chrysolite (Greek golden stone), which also used to designate other gemstones of a similar colour. As for the name “Olivine”, this is mainly used in mineralogy. The major deposit were located in the Red Sea, on the volcanic island Zebirged (St. John Island). This deposit has been producing gemstones for 3.500 years. It is on the walls of the cavities formed by the peridotite crumbly rock that the most beautiful crystals are found. The Upper Burma serpentines quarries also give beautiful gemstones. New deposits: in Pakistan and in China. Peridot is not subjected to any kind of treatment.
